‘Terror atmosphere’ on 34th anniversary of Tiananmen…arrests and detentions for candlelight vigil in Hong Kong

On the 34th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests, there were a number of arrests and detentions in Hong Kong today.

More than 6,000 police and armoured vehicles, including riot and counter-terrorism units, were deployed around Hong Kong on Thursday, according to Reuters and the BBC.

Police conducted stop-and-frisk operations in Victoria Park and throughout the streets.

Victoria Park was the site of a massive candlelight vigil every 4 June from 1990 to 2019, but in 2020 and 2021, the rally failed to take place as Chinese authorities sealed off the park citing the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, pro-China groups pre-empted the park rally by saying they would stage an event.

One of those detained said, “Let’s hold candles. Let’s commemorate June 4,” before being detained by police.

Another was arrested for holding a book titled “May 35th”, a phrase that was substituted for 4 June, the anniversary of the Tiananmen protests, after it was censored by the Chinese authorities.

Others detained by police included Chan Po-ying, president of the Social Democratic Alliance.

Police issued a statement and said they had arrested some people on suspicion of incitement and public disorder.

Reuters, citing witnesses, said more than a dozen people were detained on the day, while Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that 23 people were detained.

One citizen at Victoria Park told Reuters, “The Chinese authorities want us to forget, but we can’t forget. China wants to glorify all history,” adding, “We have to move to inform others.”
